Solar Energy Battery Storage

What do solar energy batteries do?

Solar batteries work by storing the excess energy produced by solar panels during the day, for later use when the sun isn't shining.

That means, if you’re out of the house all day, your panels and battery are working together to save you energy when it gets dark.

Our unpredictable weather means we’re used to the sun not always shining. These batteries store energy for use on days when your generation levels are lower. But, even when it’s dark, you can continue to benefit from your solar battery. This saves you money on bills and maintains your sustainability too.

If you don’t have a battery storage system, you will be dependent on energy suppliers for all of your needs when night-time comes.  Batteries solve this issue by storing extra energy for use when your panels cannot generate any energy.

Most households will roughly require a 5kWh solar battery, but homes with very high electricity usage should look at getting a battery sized around 10kWh. We can recommend what battery you should get based on your previous electricity usage.

How long do the batteries last?

Lifetime of batteries

Solar Batteries typically last between 10 and 15 years, however their lifespan can vary based on factors like battery type, usage frequency, and environmental conditions.

  • Lithium-ion (LFP) types, generally have a lifespan of 10 and 15 years.

  • Lead-acid batteries have shorter lifespans of between 3 and 7 years.

You'll likely need to replace a solar battery at least once during the 25 to 30 year lifespan of your solar panels.

Advantages of solar batteries include:

  • reduced energy bills,

  • backup power during outages and allows you to be more reliant on your own energy generation rather than suppliers

  • environmental benefits
